Description:

WWII Secret Report of USS Salamaua Typhoon Experience, June 10, 1945

22pp, measuring 8" x 10.5", no place, stamped June 10, 1945. A report by J.I. Taylor, Jr. of the USS Salamaua, addressed to the Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Fleet, detailing the ship's encounter with a typhoon on June 4-5. Includes information of how the crew prepared for weathering the storm, a narrative of the event, comments and recommendations, a summary of damage, and an aerological report. A section of the Narrative reads in part:

"…By this time the seas had become mountainous and winds of hurricane force were blowing from the southeast. The barometer had dropped to 986 millibars and it was apparent that the storm center was in the immediate vicinity and could not be avoided…a course to the south southeast (assuming it could have been maintained) would have put the sea ahead and the ship would have ridden better, but no headway could be made against the sea and the ship would have been driven before the storm for an indefinite period. The storm was at its height, and its fury defies description. The wind was blowing steadily at 8- knots or better from south and southwest. The anemometer will not record over 80 knots, but it is estimated that gusts at times certainly exceeded 90 knots. Seas were phenomenal and some were observed to be over 60 feet high. With the extremely heavy spray, sea and ceiling appeared to merge…During the short interval that SALAMAUA lost steerage way and fell off into the trough of the sea, she pitched and rolled heavily an unobserved amount but certainly more than the 32⁰ observed on earlier rolls. Heavy green seas broke over the flight deck forward. All storm damage was sustained during this interval. The forward starboard lookout platform gallery broken adrift and washed away soon thereafter. Flight deck supports forward, catapult supports and corners of the flight deck were ruptured and/or bent. Number I 40mm director and number 3 twin 40mm mount were twisted. The deck and outboard bulkhead of the 8-man officer' bunk room just forward of the Captain's stateroom were ruptured and flooded by the sea. A TBM on the flight deck snapped all lines, blew over on one of the security patrol, killing him, and ran amok, wrecking all other planes on the flight deck (6 TBM's and 1 FM). An FM on the hangar deck pulled its securing rings out of the deck and damaged two other FM's before it could be secured. About this time the safety glass window panels in the open bridge blew in, nearly knocking out the conning officer…"

In his concluding recommendations Taylor writes, "this command is convinced that the best method of handling a ship in a typhoon is to keep out of it." Toning to all pages. Pages have been stapled together, with some minor tearing at the staple holes. A few small tears to page edges as well as some creasing to corners.
