Description:

Woodrow Wilson, Princeton Don, Signed Student Schedule

A Princeton University "Schedule for Academic Special Students / 2 Term 1903--1904" signed by future 28th U.S. President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) as "Woodrow Wilson" along Line 6 at lower right. The partly printed and partly handwritten form was completed for C.W. Holzhauer, Class of 1903. Cosigned by seven other Princeton University faculty members. A perforated edge at top. Scattered annotations in red pen. Isolated edge darkening, else near fine. 5.5" x 6."

Princeton senior Holzhauer enlisted in an ambitious program of study including political science, geography, physics, ethics, English, and health policy. Period publications show that Holzhauer was also a member of the university men's gymnastics team.

Aspiring academic Woodrow Wilson had taught American history and political science at some of the country's leading universities during the last decades of the nineteenth century: at Bryn Mawr (1885-1888), at Wesleyan University (1888-1890), and finally at Princeton University (1890-1902). While at Princeton, Wilson taught jurisprudence; indeed, he is listed as the instructor of "Jur. + Pol. 2" on this student form. Wilson had also been appointed President of Princeton University two years earlier, in 1902.

During his time administrating Princeton University, Wilson succeeded in implementing a more rigorous academic curriculum by establishing individual departments and employing a network of teaching assistants. He increased the diversity of the faculty, but not of the student body. And in a move that anticipated his future political endeavors, Wilson tried to democratize student life through the establishment of quadrangles.

The student form is also signed by seven other faculty members of Princeton University, some of which have been identified.

- Line 1. Signed by Winthrop More Daniels (1867-1944), who had come to Princeton to assist Wilson in 1892, as "WM Daniels." Daniels would teach in the Politics Department between 1892-1911.

- Line 3. Signed by William Libbey III (1855-1927), a full professor of physical geography after 1883, as "W Libbey."

- Line 4. Signed by Cyrus Fogg Bracket (1833-1915) as "C.F. Brackett." Brackett offered instruction in Physics, or Natural Philosophy, between 1873-1909.

- Line 5. Signed by Alfred A. Woodhull (1837-1921), a retired Civil War veteran and U.S. Army surgeon, as "Alf Woodhull." Woodhull lectured on personal hygiene and general sanitation between 1902-1907.

- At bottom. Signed by William K. Prentice (1871-1964) as Secretary of the Faculty Committee on Academic Special Students, as "Wm K. Prentice, Sec'y." Prentice was a professor of Classics.
