Description:

William McKinley TLS as President on Executive Mansion Stationery--Rare

1p typed letter signed by 25th U.S. President William McKinley (1843-1901) as "William McKinley" at lower right. Written in Washington, D.C. on October 2, 1897. Typed in teal ink on watermarked bifold stationery with "Executive Mansion, / Washington." letterhead. Expected light paper folds, else near fine. 5.625" x 9".

President McKinley wrote this thank you note to Joseph Hodges Choate (1832-1917), the renowned American lawyer. "I can hardly tell you how thoroughly we enjoyed our call at your beautiful home in Stockbridge", McKinley wrote in part. McKinley, accompanied by First Lady Ida McKinley, had visited the summer home of Joseph Hodges Choate and his wife Caroline Dutcher Sterling Choate in Stockbridge, Massachusetts only seven months into his first and only presidential term. The Choates's 44-room summer home perched on a hillside was called Naumkeag, and it can still be visited today as a historic house museum. This may have been the same visit when the McKinleys stayed at Stockbridge's Red Lion Inn, where Presidents Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Coolidge also famously bunked overnight.

Joseph Hodges Choate was one of the most famous lawyers of the Gilded Age. A partner in one of the most important law offices in New York City, Choate was involved in many high-profile cases. He litigated cases spanning from political corruption and disputed elections, to contested estates, the income tax, racial quotas, and prohibition. In 1899, President McKinley appointed Choate, a fellow Republican, to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Choate held the position until 1905.
