This pass was issued to Charles Schreyvogel (1861-1912), an American artist specializing in Western subjects. Cody had first met Schreyvogel in 1894, when he gave the artist unprecedented access to the show grounds for sketching and other artistic studies. In 1908, Cody commissioned Schreyvogel to produce a monumental oil painting entitled "Rescue at Summit Springs" [see photograph attached] which glorified Cody's role in the July 11, 1869 clash between U.S. Cavalry and Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Sioux warriors at Summit Springs in northeastern Colorado. Cody had at best only a tangential role in the battle--orchestrated to rescue two white female captives--but in Schreyvogel's painting, Cody is heroically depicted at the center of action.

The incredibly popular "Buffalo Bill's Wild West" show was a colorful and rollicksome traveling circus featuring Cowboys, Indians, Bandits, and other motley characters. Performers like Sitting Bull and Calamity Jane reenacted famous events, staged stunts and tricks, raced on horseback, and circled their Conestoga wagons to the dazzled delight of American and European crowds. In 1908, Cody merged with Gordon "Pawnee Bill" Lillie's traveling circus; the "Two Bill's Show" would fold in 1913.

Before he was an entrepreneurial showman, Cody served as a Union soldier in the Civil War, Pony Express rider, scout, Indian fighter, and professional hunter. Cody allegedly earned his moniker "Buffalo Bill" by the ease with which he slayed thousands of the beasts of the Plains. Cody was seldom seen without "Lucrezia Borgia", his Springfield Model 1866 rifle.
