Lawrence P. Varnum (1843-1930) was a private in the 25th Maine Volunteer Infantry, and later a second lieutenant in the 79th United States Colored Troops from September 1863. He was discharged in August 1864.

James H. Ledlie (1832-1882) was a civil engineer for railroads and a general in the Union Army during the Civil War. He initially served as major in the 19th New York Infantry, subsequently renamed the 3rd New York Artillery. Ledlie’s division was destroyed in the Battle of the Crater near Petersburg, and Ledlie was effectively dismissed from the service in December 1864 for dereliction of duty.

Godfrey Weitzel (1835-1884) was a German-American major general in the Union Army during the Civil War. He served as acting mayor of New Orleans during the Union occupation and also captured and occupied Richmond, Virginia. From November 1864, he commanded the XXV Corps, composed of United States Colored Troops.

Giles A. Smith (1829-1876) was a general in the Union Army during the Civil War.
