Description:

"Where The Wild Things Are" Massive Original Vintage Commercial Banner for The Bell Atlantic Campaign, 5 Feet Long

From the Maurice Sendak Archives, A Stunning vibrant massive vinyl vintage original Commercial Advertising Banner for the Bell Atlantic Campaign Featuring "Where The Wild Things Are", 1997. A full sheet size of 5 FEET long by 3.6 FEET wide. Accompanied with Impeccable

Provenance. Ex. Maurice Sendak Archives, with Signed Letter of Authenticity by Justin Shiller .

Bell Atlantic approached Sendak to develop an advertising campaign aimed at humanizing the company. Thus the creatures from the "Wild Things" were plastered on billboards, subway displays, television commercials, albums, bus stops, general mass media including N.Y.C. Times Square (First corporate brand advertising campaign). This was one of the unused banners from that campaign, Ca. 1997. Fine condition.

NoteNot many of these Bell Atlantic campaign banners have survived since they were usually displayed outside. Offered here is one of the few surviving vintage original commercial banners from this spectacular campaign, with provenance having come directly from the Maurice Sendak Archives. The banner was never released to an outdoor public setting so the condition is superb/fine. The fantastic piece depicts a enormous image of Moishe peering out over the tall grass... Horns and claws showing... in addition to the Bell Atlantic trademark, and the phrase "Wild Things Are Happening" along the top. A scarce one-of-a-kind piece, would make a great store front window banner or a fun piece in a house.

*Note we also have one of the scarce original Sendak drawings from the Bell Atlantic campaign offered in this auction (lot xxxxx)

About "The Wild Things are Happening", Bell Atlantic’s Campaign by Ahron D. Weiner

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 ushered in an era of deregulation that provided increased choice and confusion for the average customer. Strange new technologies were emerging, and the long-distance carriers, as well as a plethora of small upstart companies were promising to offer these new services.

The regional Bell companies started merging to achieve the scale needed to compete in this dynamic marketplace- the 1997 merger of NYNEX and Bell Atlantic created the largest company of its kind.

There was concern that customers, already confused by rapid changes in the marketplace, would be intimidated by the prospect of dealing with a company as large as the newly merged Bell Atlantic. We knew that Bell Atlantic was a huge company, but that it also had the ability to provide tailored solutions and an unparalleled level of customer care.

Enter Maurice Sendak’s Caldecott Medal winning "Wild Things", the perfect allegory for a gentle giant (once tamed by Max’s magic trick, of course). In terms of actual production of the ads and animation, Maurice illustrated each of the five print ads and all of the billboards. The campaign won a highly coveted Effie award, which is given for campaigns that maintain excellence in creativity and marketing effectiveness, and Maurice also won a Clio award in 1998 for his print ad illustrations.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
