Description:

Vermont Governor Calls for "annual tribute of THANKSGIVING" 2 Weeks after his Gubernatorial Election in 1828

A splendid Thanksgiving broadside from 1828 reminding us that political leaders continued to invoke the blessings of a higher power many generations after the Pilgrims, and illustrating the limited extent to which the United States had achieved secular government within the first decades of the Republic.

The broadside issued from Montpelier, Vermont by newly elected Governor of Vermont Samuel C. Crafts (1768-1853) on October 29, 1828 consists of over 35 lines of printed text in various fonts, styles, and sizes. Signed in print by Governor Crafts as "SAMUEL C. CRAFTS" and countersigned in print by state secretary George B. Shaw as "GEO. B. SHAW, Secretary." Vermont's state seal and motto "Freedom and Unity" appears at lower left. Pen-inscribed along the top verso.  Expected folds, some well-creased and partially split. Scattered foxing, stains, and foxing, else very good to near fine. Would present well framed. 12.5" x 16.25."

Governor Crafts announced that December 4, 1828 would be reserved as "a day of PUBLIC THANKSGIVING AND PRAISE, throughout this state; --recommending, that all persons, abstaining from ordinary labor and amusements, assemble, on that day, for the worship of Jehovah…" Universal days of thanksgiving had a twofold purpose: to express gratitude to Providence; and to ask for forgiveness. President Abraham Lincoln's second Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1863 is regarded as "officially" marking the beginning of the modern holiday we celebrate on the fourth Thursday of every November.

Samuel Crafts had assumed the governorship of Vermont--whose statehood had been formally recognized in 1791--just two weeks earlier, on October 10, 1828. Governor Crafts would serve in this capacity until 1831. Crafts was a graduate of Harvard University, a a town clerk, a probate register, a judge, and both a state and U.S. congressman prior to his governorship. After his gubernatorial term, he served as a U.S. Senator from Vermont.
