1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.875" x 9.875", "Department of State" Philadelphia, dated February 14, 1800. Boldly signed "Timothy Pickering" and addressed to Samuel Sitgreaves Esq. The text of the letter, written in an unknown hand, directs Sitgreaves to deliver letters to various individuals. In full:

"I request you to be pleased to take charge of the enclosed letters to the American Envoys to the French Republic, and immediately on your arrival in London to put them into the hands of Mr. King, to be forwarded by the safest and most expeditious conveyance. I also enclose a passport for you." With docketing on the address page that reads: "recd in London, on my Return from Bath, May 8, 1800." With flattened mail folds. Light ghosting at the lower margins due to letter being folded.

Timothy Pickering (1745-1829) was a Massachusetts politician who served as Secretary of State under Presidents George Washington and John Adams. He clashed with Adams over the president's intention to make peace with France, and Pickering was dismissed from office just three months after this letter was composed. Samuel Sitgreaves (1764-1827) was a Pennsylvania lawyer who was elected to Congress, serving from 1795-1798. In 1788, Sitgreaves was appointed the U.S. Commissioner to Great Britain to handle debt claims by the British government accrued during the American Revolution.
