Description:

Three Signed Accounts of John F. Kennedy's Assassination

A group of three typed accounts, relating to the president's assassination. The first, is a clipped signature of Dallas policeman, Seymour Weitzman, attached to a typed copy of the original statement, measuring 3.5" x 1", Dallas, dated November 23, 1963. Signed "Seymour Weitzman". The statement, provided before a Notary Public, was given the day after the parade, which Weitzman had attended. It reads, in part: "I was standing on the corner of Main and Houston, and as the President passed and made his turn going west towards Stemmons, I walked casually around. At this time my partner was behind me and asked me something. I looked back at him and heard 3 shots. I ran in a northwest direction and scaled a fence towards where we thought the shots came from. Then someone said they thought the shots came from the old Texas Building. I immediately ran to the Texas Building and started looking inside. At this time Captain Fritz arrived and ordered all of the sixth floor sealed off and searched..."

The second account is provided by famed journalist Barbara Walters, 1p, measuring 7.25" x 10.5", New York City, dated April 13, 1973. Signed "Barbara Walters". A brief statement given to Jim Bishop of Ladies Home Journal, reading simply "I do indeed remember exactly where I was at the time that John F. Kennedy was shot."

The final account is given by author Joyce Carol Oates, 1p, measuring 5.5" x 8.5", Windsor, Ontario, dated April 16, 1973. Addressed again to Jim Bishop of Ladies Home Journal. On University of Windsor letterhead and signed "Joyce Carol Oates", it reads in part: "...The news came in over a radio in the shop, and the saleswomen were extremely upset. We left at once and drove home. We were strangely calm at first, as if in a kind of suspension; as the hours passed I began to react emotionally, more freely than my husband did. I think this freeing of grief, of frustration, of sheer undifferentiated emotion is the only possible human reaction to such a catastrophe--which, in its blunt, irrevocable way, did draw some of us closer together." Accompanied by the original transmittal cover.

The three accounts are together with a [Joseph P. Kennedy] Paul E. Murphy Typed Letter Signed, 1p, measuring 8" x 10.5", New York, dated December 5, 1960. Murphy, who was working with John F. Kennedy's father as a financial agent, signs "Paul Murphy". Addressed to Magda Kraxner, providing a copy of requested invitations for the Inauguration ceremonies. Two of the letters in the group have flattened mail folds. Clipped signature is toned. Uneven toning as well as soiling to the Murphy letter. All bold signatures.  From the collection of Ron Hoskins assassinologist.
