Three Early Providence, Rhode Island Lottery Tickets
A group of three lottery tickets, which were sold to raise funds for a "Meeting House", or church, and a bridge in Providence, Rhode Island. Such lotteries were commonplace to raise money for building projects but had to be sanctioned by the state. Each ticket was hand-numbered and printed in a series of “classes”, one through six. All tickets possess light to moderate toning throughout, with uneven edges. Includes:
Providence Meeting House Lottery Ticket. 1p, measuring 3" x 1.5", Providence, Rhode Island, undated. A First Class ticket, numbered "848." Signed by Samuel Nightingale Jr. Printed on face of ticket: "The Possessor of this Ticket [No. 848] is entitled [sic] to any Prize drawn against said Number, in a Lottery granted by the GENERAL ASSEMBLY of the Colony of Rhode Island (for repairing, &c the Presbyterian or Congressional Meeting-House in said Town) if demanded within Six Months after drawn; subject to no Deduction." Intricate black-bordered decoration. Signed on verso: "2 Dow pn Henry Sterling/S.I.S.H."
Providence Meeting House Lottery Ticket. 1p, measuring 4" x 2.25", Providence, Rhode Island, circa February 1796. A First Class ticket numbered "115". Signed by Ben Hoppin. Printed on face of ticket: "THIS TICKET entitles the Bearer to such PRIZE as may be drawn against its Number, on Demand, agreeably to an Act of the Legislature of the State of Rhode-Island, February Session, 1796." Intricate black-bordered decoration. Unsigned on verso.
Providence Great-Bridge Lottery Ticket. 1p, measuring 5" x 2.25", Providence, Rhode Island, circa October 30, 1790. A Fourth Class ticket numbered "5,057." Signed by Andrew Lexter. Printed on face of ticket: "THIS TICKET intitles [sic] the Possessor to such PRIZE as may be drawn against its Number, agreeably to an Act of the LEGISLATURE of the State of Rhode-Island, passed October 30th, 1790. Subject to no Deduction." Intricate black-bordered decoration. Unsigned on verso.
