Description:

Thomas Lawrence ALS "the Pictures of the King & the Dauphin must occupy me the greatest part of this present month..."

4pp of a bifolium, measuring 7.25" x 8.5", [Paris], undated [1825]. Boldly signed "Thos Lawrence" and addressed to an unknown recipient, identified only as "My Lord". Lawrence writes about his busy schedule and his weariness of his stay in Paris. In part:

"…The completion of the Pictures of the King & the Dauphin must occupy me the greatest part of this present month. With less health than I have enjoyed on former similar occassions, and (though I have to complain of no want of obliging frequent [illegible] attention from Lord G) in the absence of that zealous Friendship which then added so greatly to my comfort, Paris has no further attraction for me than to enable me to give competition to the object of His Majesty's gracious mission…In all personal intercourse with which I have been bound (during my labors) with His Most Christian Majesty and his august Family, I have expressed the most beneficial conduct, and favor, which indeed could only have shown me, by this knowledge of His Majesty's protection. The King said to me on Friday last after a long sitting, 'I hope the King of England will be satisfied that I do all I can for his wishes.' I had asked for another quarter of an hour, 'An hour, if you wish it.' …" Letter has flattened mail folds, with separations at the spine that have been repaired with small strips of tape. Minor toning and soiling throughout. Boldly signed.

Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) was one of the leading English portrait painters, having been a child prodigy. By the age of 10, he was already supporting his family with his paintings, and he received his first royal commission in 1790, when he painted Queen Charlotte. In 1810 he gained the patronage of the Prince Regent, and from there his career skyrocketed. Commissioned portraits included those of the Duke of Wellington, Princess Charlotte, Tsar Alexander, the King of Prussia, Napoleon II, Pope Pius VII, and many others. In 1820, Lawrence was elected as the president of the Royal Academy, a position he held until his death. Throughout the 1820s, he continued to undertake royal commissions, including the portrait of King Charles X of France, which is made reference to in this letter. During this trip to Paris, he also painted the Dauphin and the Duke of Richelieu. Today, many of Lawrence's paintings can be found in the British Museum and the Ashmolean Museum.
