Description:

Thomas Jefferson & James Madison Signed Scalloped Ship's Passport

An elegant 1p document signed by 3rd U.S. President Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) as "Th. Jefferson" at lower right. Undated, ca. 1801-1809. Countersigned by James Madison (1751-1836), then U.S. Secretary of State and future 4th U.S. President, as "James Madison" at lower right. Partly handwritten and partly printed on vellum, with some administrative details left incomplete. With an embossed presidential seal at lower left. A charming vignette of a sailing ship and lighthouse at top has a scalloped edge. Expected wrinkles and folds. Scattered light soiling and foxing. Else very good. The document is flanked by engravings of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, with respective name plates. Matted and archivally framed behind museum-quality UV ray filtering glass and document separators in a handsome rosewood finished frame. Not examined out of the frame. The document, in a floating mount, measures 10.25" x 15.25." Overall size: 39.5" x 25.75" x 1.25." Accompanied by a signed James Spence Authentication Letter of Authenticity dated June 17, 2019.

The ship's passport for the "Thomas of New Bedford" is light on details, lacking the date, the master / commander's name, the ship's tonnage, and its number of crew members. Yet, the ship's port of origin strongly suggests that the "Thomas" was a whaling vessel.

In part: "By the President of the United States of America, Suffer the Brig Thomas of New Bedford … To Pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hinderance seisure or molestation …"

Boldly signed by two U.S. presidents and Founding Fathers!
