The Earl of Chatham, "The Author dreams, as most of his countrymen do, of the speedy subjugation of the Americans: - waking or sleeping we see, the bonny Caledonians are awe for government" (82); The Case stated on philosophical Ground between Great Britain and her Colonies, "This philosophical, poetical, rhapsodical politician is a vehement advocate for the independency of the colonies: he abounds in hard words and unintelligible expressions; - but, in our apprehension, he is totally deficient in the qualifications necessary to the stating the very important and interesting café between Great Britain and her colonies" (156); Thoughts on the present States of Affairs with America and the Means of Conciliation (156); Plan of Re-union between Great Britain and her Colonies (157-158); An impartial Sketch of the various Indulgences granted by Great Britain to the Colonies, upon which they have founded their Presumption of soaring towards Independence (314); Proposals for a Plan of Reconciliation and Re-union with the Thirteen Provinces of America, and for an Union with the other Colonies (315); America Lost: A Poem of Condolence. Addressed to Britannia (469-470); The Substance of General Burgoyne's Speeches, &C, "With an Appendix, containing General Washington's Letter to General Burgoyne" (476). Internally clean, with light toning. Bindings rubbed and spines darkened, with a few areas of chipping to the leather. Bumped corners.

The Monthly Review (1749-1845) was a monthly periodical published in London. Founded by Ralph Griffiths (1720-1803), a Nonconformist bookseller, it was the first periodical in England to offer reviews. The Monthly Review generally supported the Whig reforming party in the British government and took a more sympathetic outlook toward the claims of American colonists than its Tory and Royalist opponents. William Kenrick (1725-1779), the English novelist and satirist, was the editor from 1759 to 1766. George Edward Griffiths (1769-1829), the son of the founder, took over management of The Monthly Review on his father’s death in 1803 and edited it until 1825 when he sold the business.
