Description:

The Decisive Moment by Henri Cartier-Bresson

First Edition. Simon and Schuster/Verve, New York, 1952. Illustrated with 126 large b/w photographic plates, printed in heliogravure. 12-page pamphlet with Captions is laid-in. Folio, pictorial paper-covered boards illustrated by Matisse, with matching pictorial dust wrapper. A good to very good book with clean boards and clean internal pages; but the spine ends are chipped and frayed. In a good to poor dust jacket with tears and full separations of the jacket along the front flap, along the spine, and the rear flap. The jacket is overall sunned and browned and most of the jacket spine is missing and detached. However, a fine condition copy of this book commands upward of $3500, and as such this is a nice alternative for one seeking this title. 11" x 14.5"

"Cartier-Bresson has a special interest in photographing people and in capturing the essence of what has not previously been seen. He is famous for his theory of the 'decisive moment'-that is seizing the split second when the subject stands revealed in its most significant aspect" Today he ranks as one of the most important and influential photographers of this century" (Blodgett, 96)--"the Raphael of 20th-century photographers" (Icons of Photography, 58). Decisive Moment is Cartier-Bresson's most famous work, containing his most comprehensive and important statement on the meaning, technique, and utility of photography.
