Faneuil Hall, located in Government Center in Boston, is a marketplace and meeting hall built in 1743. The hall burned down in 1761, but was rebuilt by the townspeople the following year. The hall was used by several famous revolutionaries, such as Samuel Adams and James Otis, earning it the nickname "the Cradle of Liberty." John Hancock (1737-1793) is best known for his large and distinctive signature on the Declaration of Independence, which gave rise to the nickname by which all signatures are still known. He served as the president of the Second Continental Congress and later the Governor of Massachusetts. Prior to the Revolutionary War, Hancock, as one of the wealthiest men in the colonies, provided financial support to the colonial cause as tensions continued to rise between rebellious colonists and Great Britain.
