Description:

Superb Arnold Bennet ALS Re: A Charity Concert for Wounded Soldiers

1p, measuring 7" x 9", Thorpe-Le-Soken, Essex, England, undated (circa February 1916). Addressed to an unknown recipient, concerning a charity concert to raise money for the Wounded Allies Relief Committee. Boldly signed "Arnold Bennett." Reads in full:

"Permit me to draw your particular attention to the enclosed leaflet about a concert at the Haymarket Theater on Sunday night, 20th February. The Wounded Allies Relief Committee has in hand a great work for the Allied wounded in England, France, Belgium, Italy, Russia, Greece, and Serbia and Montenegro, though of course in the two latter countries its activities have been interrupted. On receipt of a postcard I shall be happy to send you two pamphlets which I have written on the subject. The Concert which I have organised is in aid of the Committee's funds. It will be a concert of quite special distribution, and in taking tickets for it you will be helping a fine enterprise which needs help." The letter is accompanied by an article with color photographs about Arnold Bennett. The letter has flattened mail folds and minor edge toning. Some soiling at the left vertical edge from a removed paperclip.

Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was an English novelist and playwright who also briefly served as the head of the Ministry of Information during the First World War. He worked with numerous charity organizations during the war and used his skill as a writer to help raise funds for the war effort and for wounded soldiers. At the concert mentioned in the letter were numerous celebrity appearances, including actors Henry Ainley and Nelson Keys, and Australian singer Ada Crossley.
