Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. (1888-1969) was born into a political family in Massachusetts and made a large fortune as a stock market and commodity investor. In 1914, he married Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald, and they had nine children between 1915 and 1932. He was a leading member of the Democratic Party and of the Irish Catholic community. President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Kennedy to be the first chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, a position he held from 1934 to 1935. From 1937 to 1938, he led the newly created U.S. Maritime Commission. He also served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1938 to late 1940. After the outbreak of World War II, Kennedy was skeptical of Great Britain’s ability to survive the attacks of Nazi Germany. In the wake of this controversy, Kennedy resigned his position. He was involved in the political careers of his sons, John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Ted Kennedy.

Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy (1890-1995) was born in Boston, the daughter of John F. Fitzgerald, later the mayor of the city for two terms and a Congressman from Massachusetts. She studied at a convent school in the Netherlands and graduated from high school in Massachusetts in 1906. She attended the New England Conservatory in Boston and at the Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan. She married Joseph P. Kennedy in 1914, and they had nine children together. A strict Catholic, she faithfully attended Mass and raised her children in the Catholic faith. In 1951, Pope Pius XII granted Kennedy the title of countess in recognition of her “exemplary motherhood and many charitable works.” She was also a lifelong autograph collector. She suffered a stroke in 1984 and had to use a wheelchair for the remainder of her life.
