Sporting Incidents: being a Collection of Sixteen Plates Done in Color with Numerous Smaller Cuts Representing the Most Important Events of the Track Field and Road


Henry T. Thomas, New York, 1893. One of 1000 copies, unnumbered. Illustrations by W. S. Vanderbilt Allen. Elephant size volume, 18 x 23 inches, with internal pages unbound as issued. 16 heliotype plates were originally issued, of which this copy has 8 plates remaining, the others are missing. Hardcover in the scarce In the original four pictorial board portfolios, buckram spine, with edgewear and chipping. Condition: Good. The internal pages are overall slightly grubby with edgewear, the plates are on hard board and have held up quite well, with only a bit of corner wear and one or two with some light stains. The only other copies we have located listed range from $2000 to $6000.

A colorful and celebrated work, in the original four part portfolios, comprising sixteen plates originally, this copy has eight of the sixteen plates, and descriptive text. "A good account of sporting activities in the Gay Nineties . they are the only pictorial representation we have of this period" (Gee). Uncommon. Below are the plates remaining with this volume:

This is a magnificent celebration of sporting, with the most stunning scenes of hunting and horseback riding, featuring horseback riding as well as tandem riding, champion stakes, hunts, polo, and much more. Each sport is described in a text preceding the plates, with advice as to its practice, or fascinating historical anecdotes. ** W.S. Vanderbilt Allen (1860-1931) was an American who was grandson to Cornelius Vanderbilt. He trained in Paris with Gerome and Claude Monet. ** Colonel William Jay (1841-1915) was an American soldier and lawyer. A noted horseman, he was the first president and one of the founders of the Coaching Club in 1876, which was the pioneer coaching club at the time.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
