Description:

Sheridan ALS to Sherman Re: Indian Protests & Forced Removal

Bi-fold autograph letter signed, penned on 3 pages with signatures and docket on fourth page. Dated "Chicago June 11, 1881", and signed by Philip Sheridan "P.H. Sheridan". Uneven toning, and mounting strip to verso of second leaf, not affecting the signature. 5" x 6.5"

Sheridan, Union major general of cavalry and famous Indian fighter was also known for eliminating J.E.B Stuart at Yellow Tavern. The letter was written to his fellow ex-general, William Sherman. Two years later Sheridan would succeed Sherman as Commanding General of the U.S. Army, and would hold that position until his death.

Sheridan transmits a report on the ongoing forced removal of Native Americans from their lands to reservations. In part:

"…Military affairs are running smooth in this division. The Indians at Buford came down to Standing Rock [Reservation] without any trouble and I presume those at [Fort] Keogh will follow suit. They have made some protests, but when the time comes will go quietly. There has been considerable murmuring among the Utes but the presence of a good sized force at the umcomply'g[?] camp diminished their resistance to the Commissioners & their plans. The latter body is now on the move for the selection of a new agency of Reservation. New Mexico is [?], so also is the Depot of the Platte. The extension of the North Pacific railroad to Glendin Creek will probably make considerable changes in the lines of transportation in the upper country & I am going out to the end of the road. This crossing [?] with General [Alfred] Terry to see what is best to be done …"
