Scarce John F. Kennedy 1946 U.S. Congressional Campaign Card, Stylish Presentation

A vintage printed campaign card urging voters to elect John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) as the Democratic candidate to represent Massachusetts' 11th District in the U.S. Congress, ca. 1946. The campaign card, in near pristine condition, is displayed in a double-sided floating mount at the center of a sleek, blonde frame with U.V. ray-filtering Plexiglas. The reverse of the card is visible through a neat cutaway. Not examined out of the frame. The actual size of the card is 3.25" x 5.5" while the frame overall measures 9.125" x 11.325" x 1.5."

The front of the campaign card reads: "Elect / John F. / Kennedy / Democratic Candidate for / Congress / Primary Election June 18th / 11th District." On the reverse, biographical information about the candidate can be found outlining his family life, education, military service affiliations, and professional background. Beneath Kennedy's slogan "The New Generation Offers a Leader" emblazoned at top are select press testimonials. Magazine editor Henry R. Luce raved: "If Kennedy is characteristic of the younger generation, we would be happy to have the destinies of his generation handed over to his generation at once…"

John F. Kennedy had been elected to his first political office in 1946, when he became the U.S. Congressman representing the 11th district of Massachusetts. (The 11th comprised parts of Boston, Cambridge, and Sommerville in 1946; the district is defunct today.) He ran as one of nine Democratic Party candidates of the 11th district in the June 18th primary elections, claiming 41% of the votes (22,183 out of 54,754.) In the November 5, 1946 general elections, Kennedy trounced his competitors, Republican candidate Lester W. Bowen and Prohibition candidate underdog Philip Geer, commanding over 71% of the votes. Congressman Kennedy proved to be extremely proactive and industrious throughout his six-year-long tenure as U.S. Congressman, from 1947-1953. He would reach the U.S. Senate in 1953 and the White House in 1961.
