Sam Houston LS and Free Franked Envelope, Characteristic Large & Bold Sigs

1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.75" x 9.875", Washington, D.C., dated February 10, 1855. Boldly signed by Houston at the conclusion as "Sam Houston" and addressed to Nicholas Dean Esq. The letter was dictated by Houston to a friend, who penned the short correspondence. Reads in part:

"The greenest spots on memorys' [sic] waste are my early friendships. Yours I treasured among the number. For three days I have been ill and am prostrate now. I hope to be up in a few days. My disease has been toothache, face ache, & headache. I have had my tooth extracted & hope to get repose tonight. I propose to be at the "Metropolitan" on the night of the rq' inst when it will give me great pleasure to shake your honest hand." Letter has flattened mail folds, with nearly a full separation at the center horizontal fold. A few small separations starting at edges as well. Light edge toning. Large and bold signature by Houston.

Accompanied by the original envelope, postmarked February 11, free franked by Houston "Sam Houston." The envelope has two strips of take a the lower edge, with expected wear and soiling.

Samuel Houston (1793-1863) served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas, and was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the United States Senate. He also served as the sixth governor of Tennessee and the seventh governor of Texas, the only American to be elected governor of two different states in the United States.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice, unless you inform us otherwise, immediately upon your receipt of invoice***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers.
