Description:

Ron Reagan Superb ALS ex Forbes

Ronald Reagan Letter On the Right to Work Law "I have great faith in .. patriotism of the rant + file members"

Single page autograph letter signed, 4.75" x 8.25". Penned on recto and verso. Ronald Reagan signed the letter on the verso as "Best regards RR". Although undated, a red date in another hand is located to the upper right corner "5/2/67". Fine condition.

A fascinating letter revolving around State vs the Federal government, and on Unions and the Right to Work laws. Written by Reagan during the early part of this first term as governor of California. Shown in part below:

"I had some positive papers on this general subject back during the campaign but nothing available now.

Briefly I took a stand against the repeal of 14B without regard to the merit of the de-merits of … The Fed government has usurped so much of the authority of the States that I believe this is one more instance where the people of each states are better able to make the decision on Rt to work than is the Fed govt. In short I opposed repeal of 14B on a state rights basis.

On Rt to work itself I opposed this nine years ago when it was proposed in California + I still oppose it as being too big a gun for the problem we are trying to solve. Having spent almost 25 years on the board of a union (screen actors guild) and being Pres 6 terms I have some knowledge of the extent to which Unions have gotten out of hand as well as the safe guards the members must have against their leadership … I have great faith in the fairness of patriotism of the rant + file members. Given them a secret ballot + much of the agitation for Rt to work laws will disappear …"

Section 14(b) of the Taft-Hartley Act affirms the right of states to enact Right to Work laws. In California, right to work laws do not exist. ... Regardless of whether a state has passed a right-to-work law, it is illegal for employers to threaten employees who express an interest in joining or forming a union or to promise certain benefits to those who refuse to join a union. "Right-to-work laws" refers to state laws that prohibit union security agreements between companies and labor unions. Under these laws, employees in unionized workplaces are banned from negotiating contracts which require all members who benefit from the union contract to contribute to the costs of union representation.
