Description:

Rocket Man Rare 1928 Tsiolkovsky ALS about His Work "On The Moon"

Single large sheet, 8.5" x 13". Written in the hand of Tsiolkovsky recto and verso. Dated "1928", and signed by Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky, as "Yours K. Tsiolkovsky". The sheet was cut across in two locations and then tacked back together with tiny tape pieces, else near fine.

A letter written regarding corrections to Tsiolkovsky's 1887 publication "LUNA". Written by Tsiolkovsky to Yakov Perelman, a Russian and Soviet science writer and author of many popular science books, including Physics Can Be Fun and Mathematics Can Be Fun (both translated from Russian into English). Shown in part below:

"1928. Respected Yakov Isidorovich. I won't make additional information to Luna [I] can just mention that the story was written roughly in [18]85-[18]87, when I was 29-30 years old, but printed in [18]90. Writing here the list of misprints and mistakes. [I] won't transfer verst (old Russian measurement) to kilometers and sazhens to meters. Just as you want. You may do changes as I wrote to you.

(Then he writes a number of the pages and lines and what should be changed on this particular page, words and numbers) After he finished annotations of the pages (last page number is 42) he wrote:

The rest is not important It'll be good to make addition to the pages 8 after the 5th line. Like this: Soon, however we had to come back home, because the sun has heated our bodies and we had a headache, despite that we had hats. We had to look for the white summer cloth and big umbrellas in the storage. But it was still hot despite the coldness of the ground.

Having perfected these protecting covers and having tried them we could stay under the sunrays. Their strong activity is understandable; the atmosphere is not weakening them. And now we again outside on the sun.

I repeat; you can change and cross whatever you want. Yours K. Tsiolkovsky"

In Russia, Tsiolkovsky is known as "the father of theoretical and applied cosmonautics." His work helped drive the Russian space race, inspiring rocket designers such as Valentin Glushko and Sergey Korolyov. He developed insights into space travel and rocket science that are still in use over a hundred years later, earning him a place in history as one of the pioneers of astronautics. The most prominent crater on the far side of the moon bears his name, as does asteroid 1590 Tsiolkovsky.
