Description:

Robert F. Kennedy Signed NJ Democratic Party Fundraising Program

A program and menu from a 1966 Mercer County, New Jersey Democratic fundraising event signed by then U.S. Senator from New York Robert F. Kennedy (1925-1968) as "Robert Kennedy" at the bottom of the front cover bearing his portrait. Expected wear including minor wrinkles and isolated stains, especially verso. Else very good to near fine. 8.5" x 11." Provenance: From the collection of Ron Hoskins, assassinologist.

The program and menu to the "Mercer County / Democratic / Fund Raising / Dinner / August 18, 1966 / Senator Robert F. Kennedy" opens to reveal a listing of dais guests on the extreme left; menu options in the center; and an overview of Mercer County Democratic Candidates on the extreme right. That fall of 1966, Democratic candidates for U.S. Congress, Town Council, Mayor, Tax Collector, and Township Clerk from Princeton Township and other New Jersey communities were on the ballot.

Evidently, Bobby Kennedy had been recruited to drum up support for fellow New Jersey Democrats prior to the 1966 elections. Though he appeared at this fundraising dinner, Kennedy later stated in the August 20, 1966 issue of the Hackensack, New Jersey newspaper "The Record" that he had no intentions of further participating in the upcoming primary elections. The headlining candidate of this fundraising dinner, incumbent Democratic Congressman Frank Thompson, Jr., was reelected to the congressional seat of the 4th District of New Jersey. Other results were more mixed; the New Jersey Senate race yielded a Republican winner in Clifford P. Case.

Robert F. Kennedy was one of the most high-profile figureheads in the Democratic Party in the 1960s. After serving as U.S. Attorney General during his brother's administration, RFK had won the 1964 U.S. Senate race and served as a junior Senator from New York until his assassination in June 1968.
