Description:

RFK Photo Archive of 20+ Photos, Many Vintage

A large archive of photographs, many vintage press photos, depicting Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy (1925-1968) and members of his family, ca. 1968-1971. Provenance: From the collection of Ron Hoskins, assassinologist.

The 23 photographs present here are black and white glossy photos, mostly 8" x 10" in size with the smallest measuring 8.625" x 7." In remarkably good condition overall, with minor condition issues including slight curling, scattered mounting traces and edge darkening, and isolated publishing marks with orange crayon or red marker. A majority of the photographs are press copies; several are captioned at bottom, and many are either stamped, labeled, or hand-inscribed verso, sometimes with press printing instructions. Press agencies credited with the photography include: Associated Press Wirephotos; United Press International Photos; Bob Shultz, and others.

The photographs feature the following individuals:
Robert F. Kennedy (6); Ethel Kennedy (6); Rose Kennedy (2); Edward Kennedy (6); Joan Kennedy (5); Eunice Kennedy Shriver (1); RFK children (4); Leonard Bernstein (1); RFK assistant Frank Mankiewicz (2), and others, including those wounded during the assassination.

Events depicted include: RFK's 1968 California presidential campaign; RFK's assassination; RFK's funeral; RFK's grave site commemorations; and the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in September 1971. The murder trial of Sirhan Sirhan is alluded to by a photo of one of the witnesses, Roosevelt Grier, who tackled Sirhan in the Ambassador Hotel ballroom.

Please refer to individual catalog photos to see a cross-section of the variety, type, and quality of the photographs in the archive. Featured photos include those related to RFK's assassination on June 5, 1968. There are shots taken in the Ambassador Hotel ballroom, including a blurry interior shot of cameras pointed towards the speaker's podium, and one of shooting victims Paul Schrade lying unconscious on the floor. A photograph crowds gathered in front of the Hospital of the Good Samaritan give a sense of that night's uncertainty, and close-ups of Frank Mankiewicz's face as he reported RFK's death at 1:44 am on June 6, 1968 are equally haunting.
