Description:

Rev War Medical Invoice for "bleeding girl Rachael"

Manuscript Document Signed, "Claudius Buster", 1 p., Augusta County, 7.75" x 10", being a medical account of services provided.  Folds, minor wrinkling, slight edge irregularities, some spreading of ink.

This account sheets reads, in part, "For Med & Attendance on Bro. Joel" ... "Medicine & bleeding girl Rachael" (Rachael may possibly be a slave) ... "Visit & Medicine for Bro. Joel" on March 19th and April 1st of 1818 ... "Phiol Laudanum for do - do (Bro. Joel)".

Bleeding, or bloodletting, was used for hundreds of years to help cure illness and restore health, and its popularity thrived in the 19th century.  Considered one of medicine’s oldest practices, bloodletting is thought to have originated in ancient Egypt.

By the 19th century, Laudanum, a highly addictive opioid, was widely prescribed for ailments from colds to meningitis to cardiac diseases, in both adults and children. Until the early 20th century, laudanum was sold without a prescription and was a constituent of many patent medicines.  Today, the drug is strictly regulated and controlled throughout most of the world.

Claudius Buster (1764-1842) descended from one of the earliest Scotch and Irish families of Virginia, according to the Government reports of Revolutionary War pensions.  He drew a pension in 1841 for service with the Colonies.  He was one of the most prosperous and most prominent men of his county.
