Description:

[Rembrandt] Reubens Peale Philadelphia Museum Co. Signed Stock

Measuring 12.75" x 7.5", Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, dated October 19, 1837. A stock certificate, No. 78, issuing 50 shares of Capitol Stock in the Philadelphia Museum Company. Signed twice "Rubens Peale", once on front and once on verso. Also signed twice by his uncle as "James Peale" and "JA Peale". On verso is a record of the transference of one share of stock to Charles West Thompson. The certificate has edge toning and a roughly cut left edge. Adhesive staining at the left side. Boldly signed by both men.

Rubens Peale (1784-1865) was the fourth son of famed American painter, soldier, and inventor Charles Wilson Peale (1741-1827). Although part of a painting family, Rubens only began painting later in life due to his poor eyesight. In 1810, he became the director of his father's Philadelphia museum, which he ran for eleven years. His older brother, Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860) was a prolific painter and, like his father, painted American heroes and politicians such as George Washington, John C. Calhoun, Thomas Jefferson, and others. James Peale (1749-1831) was the younger brother of Charles. He, too, painted portraits of Washington and other notables, but is better known for his miniatures and still-life paintings.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
