Description:

Reagan Discusses Healthcare System Problems and Costs in 1967-Ex Forbes

Single page autograph letter signed, 6" x 9", and written by Reagan extensively to the recto and verso. The letter has a single line of red running across it on a diagonal. Dated "9/26/67", and signed by Ronald Reagan on the verso as "Ron". Ex. The Forbes Collection. Malcolm Forbes (1919-1990), American owner-publisher of Forbes magazine, and consummate collector,  amassed one of the most substantial and broad collections of such breadth and depth that it filled a half-dozen residences, and sat on three continents. Many of his manuscripts were sold in Multi-million dollar sales By Christie's in the early 2000’s. The Forbes name is considered to be the apex of provenance when attached to an item like the above. We are honored to have been chosen by the family to sell at auction the substantial balance of the collection.

In this letter Reagan hashes out the problems both current and in the future with the existing healthcare system in California. It is astounding to see how these problems mirror our situation 50 years later. He writes to Mayor Sam Yorty shown in part below:

" I doubt that we can come to a meeting of the minds on this subject of Medi-Cal, but I reject categorically that we are either illegal or inhuman in what we are trying to do. And to suggest that we are running the risk of encouraging socialized medicine is almost too far out for answer …"

Reagan addresses that both doctors and vendors are running the risk of non-payment if the judge's decision is overturned.

"As to lack of humanity, it is under the judge's ruling that 150,000 people will be denied any state care + must fall back on the counties a cost of $20 mil in Los Angeles County alone .. It was on record that Medi-Cal had such built-in flaws it had to be reconstructed. If we asked the taxpayers for another $200 mil to meet this problem, we'd have to come right back next year and ask for another chunk as far ahead as we can see …"
