Description:

Rare Joseph P. Kennedy Photo from 1910s: "Youngest Bank President in the World"

A vintage photograph of Joseph P. Kennedy (1888-1969), patriarch of the Kennedy political dynasty, as a young businessman. The Underwood & Underwood (New York, New York) press photo is dated October 26, 1916 verso but the photo may date as early as 1913 (more on this below.) Also stamped and bearing a paper label verso. Numbered in stone in the upper right corner. Trimmed at bottom. With expected wear including light scuffs, bubbles, and wrinkles and showing minor mounting traces verso, else very good. 8" x 10." Provenance: From the collection of Ron Hoskins, assassinologist.

The black and white glossy photograph depicts Joseph Kennedy, Sr. seated at a desk, with pen to paper, earnestly looking towards the photographer. The proposed story headline, "Youngest Bank President in the World!" corresponds to a laudatory full news story affixed verso which reads in part: "Joseph P. Kennedy is the youngest bank president in the world. He is just past his twenty-fifth birthday and is head of the Columbia Trust Company of Boston, incidentally one of the soundest financial institutions in the world..."

Kennedy's birthday on September 6, 1916 would have made him 28 years old; thus it is possible that this is a period reprint of a photograph taken in 1913, when Kennedy did indeed turn 25 years old. Joseph Kennedy, Sr.'s father P.J. Kennedy was a major shareholder of the Columbia Trust Company. In 1913, the intrepid young banker had borrowed funds to prevent a change in ownership and was subsequently elected the bank's president. He married Rose Kennedy in 1914 and his first of nine children was born in July 1915…
