Description:

R.E. Lee 10" x 13" Brady Photograph One Day After Lincoln's Assassination

An impressive black and white photograph, measuring 10" x 13", no place, undated. A variation of Mathew Brady's famous photograph of Robert E. Lee, taken after his surrender at Appomattox and return home to Richmond. A seated profile portrait of the beloved Confederate general, dressed in his uniform but without his sword, sash, braid, and boots. The background of the original photograph (including Lee's porch) has been blacked out to make Lee stand out. The photograph has been mounted at the top two corners to a mat, measuring 11" x 14" overall. With slightly rolled bottom edges. Minor silvering at the photo edges and faint wear. The photograph is of indeterminable age, but based on the lovely silvering and slight oxidation at the edges, we would hypothesize that it was produced between last quarter of the 19th century to first quarter of the 20th century.

Photographer Mathew Brady had gained permission to photograph General Lee at his Richmond home on April 16, 1865, just one day after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Brady was unsure he'd be able to get the Confederate leader to sit for him following his defeat at Appomattox, but he recognized the historic value such a photograph would possess. Lee, too, had been hesitant to be photographed, but was convinced by his wife and friend, Confederate colonel Robert Ould. He purposely left off the fine accoutrements of his uniform as a show of humility and to set an example to his fellow Southerners to accept defeat and rebuild their lives. Brady's images of Lee were extremely popular and widely distributed around the country, selling in the thousands.
