Description:

"President Nixon" Personally Owned & Used Golf Ball, with Outstanding Provenance

A Spalding 90 3 Dot customized "President Nixon" golf ball personally owned and used by 37th U.S. President Richard Nixon (1913-1994). The ball is housed in a Spalding cardboard box, with the front tab detached but included, and a few stains. Accompanied by a plexiglass square display case. Air-tight provenance includes a written statement provided by Todd Anderson, who once worked for the Presidential Protective Division, circa 1969-1974. The provenance consists of email communication dated January 8, 2005.

It reads as follows: "I had a temporary assignment with the Presidential Protective Division while President Nixon was in office. When he played Burning Tree Country Club there were a number of agents with him. Those agents who were in front of him on the hole he was playing were given a couple of golf balls[.] [I]n case he hit one that could not be found, the agent would drop one in the area so play could resume a[s] quickly as possible. This did not happen often as President Nixon usually hit the ball pretty straight down the fairway."

Richard Nixon started golfing as Vice President, taking the lead from his golf-obsessed presidential running mate Dwight D. Eisenhower. By all accounts, Nixon was a proficient golfer. His personal best was 79, with a typical handicap of 12. President Nixon had a 9-hole private golf course installed at La Casa Pacifica, his home in San Clemente, California. Burning Tree Country Club, located in Bethesda, Maryland, is an exclusive all-male golf club. Honorary membership is traditionally extended to U.S. Presidents.
