Highlights and Excerpts:

- Dwight D. Eisenhower, Typed Letter Signed, to David R. Friedman, April 12, 1956, Augusta, Georgia, “Personal.”

“Thank you very much for the nice gift that you sent me. I am delighted to have the appropriate necktie and the socks, and grateful for your thoughtful kindness. I always like to hear from someone who was with me at SHAPE.”

SHAPE was the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, active from 1951 to the present. It was located at Rocquencourt, near Versailles, France, from 1953 to 1967, then at Casteau, Belgium. It controls all North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) operations worldwide. Eisenhower was the first Supreme Allied Commander Europe at SHAPE from April 1951 to May 1952.

- Dwight D. Eisenhower, Typed Letter Signed, to Rev. Ramon N. Redford, August 31, 1956, with envelope.

“Thank you very much for your letter of congratulations on my nomination. I am highly gratified by your thought of me—and I appreciate greatly your confidence and prayers.”

Rev. Ramon N. Redford (1901-1991) was the minister at Memorial Christian Church in Lynchburg, Virginia.

- Dwight D. Eisenhower, Typed Letter Initialed, to William D. Simmons, June 3, 1960.

“You see I have managed to arrange things so I won’t be in the office on the sixth, which leads me to hope that you will celebrate your birthday anniversary at home. Please know of my warm felicitations and best wishes always.”

William D. Simmons (1895-1970) was the receptionist at the White House from the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to that of President Eisenhower. He retired from his job at the end of Eisenhower’s second term in 1961.

Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) was born in Texas but grew up in Kanas. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1915. He served in the United States during World War I and was promoted to Major soon after the war. At the beginning of World War II, he joined the General Staff in Washington and quickly came to the attention of Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall. In November 1942, Eisenhower became Supreme Commander of Allied forces in North Africa, and in December 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Eisenhower as Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe, and Eisenhower had primary responsibility for planning the D-Day invasion of Normandy in June 1944. In November 1945, he returned from Europe to replace Marshall as Chief of Staff of the Army. Three years later, he became President of Columbia University, where he served until 1953. In 1952 and again in 1956, he won landslide elections as a Republican candidate for President of the United States. He served as President from 1953 to 1961. He was the only general to serve as President in the twentieth century.
