The books is a biographical account of General George Pickett's experiences during the Civil War, from it's early beginnings with slavery and secession, to Pickett's downfall at Gettysburg, and the final days of the war and surrender at Appomattox. After the war, Pickett became a tragic hero of the Confederacy. His disastrous charge at the Battle of Gettysburg haunted him for the rest of his life. After his death in 1875, his wife took up the mantel of glorifying her husband in a number of published works. A number of these books were criticized as being unreliable narratives and attempts by Mrs. Pickett to paint her husband in a more favorable light.

The lettering at the spine is very worn, and most of the gilt has been rubbed away. Wear and bumping to the spine, edges, and corners. Uneven soiling on front and back covers. Minor discoloration. Internal pages have moderate edge toning, with some dampstaining at a few of the front pages. Slightly cocked.
