Description:

"Pa'lante, Poetry, Polity, Prose of a New World", With Kerouac Autograph Annotation, Kerouac Estate Stamp

"Pa'lante, Poetry, Polity, Prose of a New World", New writing: Cuba, Ivan, USA. 1962. Edited by Howard Schulman who also included a typed signed letter to Jack Kerouac with the book (see more below). The book contains several annotations in Kerouac's hand, including his autographed annotation reference to his own novel, "'War will be impossible when marijuana becomes legal.' - VISIONS OF CODY, 1952".  A near fine softcover in lovely condition, with only very light creasing. Stamped on the title page with the Jack Kerouac Estate stamp, in addition to the raised blind seal from Executor of the Estate, John Sampas.

The letter to Kerouac from Howard Schulman, the editor of Pa'lante, is written in French. Below is the translation:

"My Dear Jean-Jacques,

Voice, my friend, my new magazine, dedicated to peace and beauty. I know your resolution not to contribute to journals, but can you make an exception in this case? I ask you for poetry or prose because I know that you are always for justice and peace and the bringing together of the peoples of all the countries of the world.

Answer me quickly, Jean Jacques, all the worlds poets wait for your response.

With Love,

Howard Schulman"

This interesting book was given to Kerouac with the intent of his review, and a request for him to offer a return contribution in the form of poetry or prose. The book was clearly read by Kerouac as the annotations are clearly in his hand, and are found within several places in the book. But perhaps the most intriguing is his reference to his own book "Visions of Cody". Kerouac placed a star next to his annotation and a second star next to a section of the book which he was reviewing which said, "It should be easier for a poet to understand a revolution, than for a revolution to understand a poetry. Poetry here meaning my contention that poet had right to use marijuana …"

A rare glimpse at the interaction between Kerouac and an editor in his genre, and a rare autograph reference by him with a direct quote from his book, "A Vision of Cody".
