Old Guard of New York Archive Containing 65+ Photographs

An interesting collection of black and white photographs, as well as a commemorative booklet, primarily relating to the history of the Old Guard of New York, a nineteenth-century veterans' organization still active today. Photographic material was taken in New Haven, Connecticut, New York City, and Governor's Island, New York, ca. 1915-1937. The archive is currently stored in a three-ring binder.

The lot is comprised of:

1. Approximately 70 black and white photographs, average size 5.875" x 3.5," depicting parade practices and processions, shooting drills, and ceremonies at various holidays, including Memorial Day and the 300th Anniversary of Governor's Island in 1937. Most photos are stamped, dated, and annotated, a few by an individual named L.F. Mohr. Several of the photographs may also depict officers from West Point or other branches of the armed forces.

2. A booklet entitled "Brochure of the Old Guard of New York City, 1826-1922" published in January 1922, featuring lists and pictures of important officers and honorary members, as well as delightful period advertisements. Including facsimile dedicated photos from honorary members Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Maréchal Ferdinand Foch at center. The front cover has a minor closed tear at top, and both covers are heavily foxed/soiled. A few interior pages are loose but included. Else very good. 8" x 11."

The Old Guard of New York was officially reorganized in 1868 to combine members of two rival militia organizations, the New York Light Guard, established in 1826, and the New York City Guard, established seven years later. A veterans' organization, the Old Guard performs mostly ceremonial duties, including participating in parades and escorting top officials. Old Guard members are recognizable by their unique uniform, which consists of a white tunic, blue trousers, and a tasseled bearskin shako.
