The personal check is accompanied by a handwritten letter to Mrs. Oswald, 1p, measuring 5.5" x 9," Grand Forks, North Dakota, dated November 26, 1963. This letter, from a Mrs. Ella Gebhardt, references the assassination of Kennedy and reads in full: "Our nation has been shocked with sorrow and shame this past week. May it be that you had no part or knowledge in the tragic events. No man has the right to take the law into his own hands for any reason. Please accept the enclosed check. I am sure you also have needs which need to be met. It is not much, but may it help in a small way."

Following the assassination of President Kennedy and of her own husband, donations poured in from the American public, who wanted to help the young widow and her two daughters. Some estimate that Marina Oswald received nearly $60,000.
