Description:

Martin Luther King Jr. Gas Receipt Signed in the Last Year of His Life

1p, measuring 4.875" x 3.25", Atlanta, Georgia, dated June 5, 1967. A carbon copy Standard Oil receipt, with the carbon copy signature of the famed Civil Rights leader. The receipt includes King's credit card number, printed name "REV. MARTIN L KING", and is signed "Martin L. King Jr." King purchased 25.6 gallons of Chevron Supreme gasoline (at $0.389 per gallon) at a Standard Oil Company station for a total of $9.95. He signed the receipt in order to authorize the charge on his credit card. Some smudging from the imprint of the business number. Boldly signed by King.

Six days later, NBC News aired a special report called "After Civil Rights: Black Power", in which veteran correspondent Sander Vanocur interviewed King at Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church. During the interview, which took place on May 8, 1967, King reflected on his "I Have a Dream" speech, saying "I must confess that that dream that I had that day has in many points turned into a nightmare. Now, I am not one to lose hope. I keep on hoping. I still have faith in the future, but I've had to analyze many things over the last few years and I would say over the last few months…We have many more difficult days ahead, and some of the old optimism was a little superficial, and now it must be tempered with a solid realism." Just over four months later, King served four days in a Birmingham jail on the charge of demonstrating without a permit. Ten months after signing this receipt, King was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.
