Description:

Malcolm X Superb ALS Last Trip to Cairo, "if the Afro Americans get any support in our struggle for Human Rights it will come from the Muslin World..."

2pp, measuring 8.25" x 10", Gazi, Cairo, dated August 9, 1964. Signed "Salaam Alaikum, Malcolm X" and addressed to Earl Grant ("My Dear Brother Earl"). The letter was written from Cairo, shortly after Malcolm X's pilgrimage to Mecca. He had recently recovered from an illness and writes to Grant about gaining aid for the Afro-American community from Muslim organizations. The letter reads in part:

"I pray these lines find you and your family in good health…as a guest of the government I absolutely had the best doctor and treatment available…I arrive back here in Cairo last night, still feeling a bit weak, but getting better. Everyone here has been fine to me, and I can say without reservation that if the Afro Americans get any support in our struggle for Human Rights, it will come from the Muslim World faster than from any other 'block.' Muslims farther than any other people, or any other form of government…I'm writing a letter today to Bro. Charles 37 also. When I return I hope to have 'names' and 'citizenship' for all who accept True Islam. I know it seems to be taking a long time but good things always take a long time. At any rate, Allah is blessing me to make some progress, and being over here is another blessing because it makes it impossible for the enemy to blame me for all of the mess that is exploding over there in the States. The OAAU now has branches in Cairo UAR and Accra Ghana, and I will organize the Afro-American community in each country that I visit so they can help from over here, in our struggle for human rights. Help keep the believers in unity, because unity is the key to our success. Greetings to your family and all the Believers." Flattened mail folds and light toning. Two spots of soiling at the left margin. Bold and clear signature. Very fine.

The OAAU was founded by Malcolm X, John Henrik Clarke, and other black nationalist leaders on June 24, 1964, in Harlem, New York. Formed shortly after his break with the Nation of Islam, the OAAU was a secular institution that sought to unify 22 million non-Muslim African Americans with the people of the African Continent. The OAAU was modeled after the Organization of African Unity (OAU), a coalition of 53 African nations working to provide a unified political voice for the continent. In the coalition spirit of the OAU, Malcolm X sought to establish economic independence, and promote African American self-determination.

Earl Grant was a close friend and confidante of Malcolm X and was one of the founding members of the OAAU. A brilliant mathematician and staunch champion of the Civil Rights cause, Grant also served as the personal photographer of Malcolm X and was present at his assassination when he was preparing to address the OAAU in Manhattan's Audubon Ballroom on February 21, 1965. Grant's photographs from the shooting were later published in Life Magazine.
