Description:

Malcolm X & Alex Haley Annotated Manuscript Page for His Autobiography, "The Autobiography of Malcolm X"

1p typed, measuring 8.25" x 13.75" (sight), no place, undated [circa 1963-1965]. Manuscript notes on a typed page, No. 28, from an early draft of "The Autobiography of Malcolm X". The notes are in the hand of Alex Haley (blue ink) and Malcolm X (red ink), and the page would be included in the Black Muslim chapter. Malcolm X made only one annotation to the page (3rd line), writing "in these demonstrations", following a sentence about whites being integrated into the group due to a decrease of violence. Haley made the majority of the annotations, crossing out an entire paragraph and reworking/rewording almost every line on the page. The text concerns a demonstration held in Washington, where the "Big Six" were to speak. The text concludes "It topped anything Hollywood could have produced", to which Haley has written underneath, "and what was the inevitable result?" The oversized page has been matted to an overall size of 18" x 24", with images of Malcolm X and Alex Haley. Light edge toning, with four small pinholes from removed staples. Else very fine.

Alex Haley first approached Malcolm X with the idea of an autobiography in 1963. Malcolm X was uncertain about the idea but was granted permission to go ahead with the project by Elijah Muhammad. The two men started working on the book in early 1963 and collaborated through a series of in-depth interviews conducted between 1963 until Malcolm X's death in 1965, with the last interview taking place just four days before his assassination. The writing, editing, and revising of the autobiography was a strenuous task, with a sort of power struggle emerging between the two men, but Haley always deferred to Malcolm X when it came to specific word choice. While some may view Haley as just a ghostwriter, many of today's scholars believe him to be an essential collaborator who helped get the human rights activist's message across to everyday readers. In 1998, Time magazine named The Autobiography of Malcolm X as one of ten "required reading" nonfiction books.
