M.L. King Poor People's 1968 Campaign Rare Poster and Program


Black and white poster, 15.75" x 22.5", circa 1968. Produced by the SCLC, the poster depicts Martin Luther King, Jr. surrounded by black citizens after an original charcoal illustration. Titled "Poor People's Campaign 1968." Signed by Atlanta-based artist, Herman "Kofi" Bailey, at the bottom, "Bailey '68". Commissioned just prior to King's assassination to promote the Poor People's Campaign.


Accompanied by a program for Solidarity Day. 4pp, 5.5" x 8.5", June 19, 1968. The event was held "In Support of the Poor People's Campaign", and featured numerous speakers, including Mrs. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Ralph David Abernathy, Miss Dorothy Height, and Hon. Edward W. Brooke. There was also a memorial tribute to Dr. King and a musical performance by Aretha Franklin.


The Poor People's Campaign was organized in 1968 by the SCLC with the aim of gaining poverty alleviation for poor citizens of the United States. In the wake of King's assassination, Ralph Abernathy took over leadership of the campaign. From May 12-June 24, 1968, protesters marched in Washington, D.C., demanding an Economic Bill of Rights. Solidarity Day was attended by between 50,000 and 100,000 people.


Toning to the edges and flattened folds of the poster. Separations starting at the folds at the lower edge. Light chipping and creasing at the upper and lower edges. Minor toning and flattened fold to the program.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice, unless you inform us otherwise, immediately upon your receipt of invoice***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
