Description:

Lyndon B. Johnson Signed & Inscribed Message to the Congress, Nov 1963

Lyndon B. Johnson's Signed and Inscribed First Message to Congress as President,  November 27, 1963. Blue Soft wraps stamped with gilt titles and the Presidential seal to the front. Bound with a blue cord. The title on the pamphlet states "Message to the Congress , ADDRESS of The President of the United States". Dated "November 27, 1963". Housed in a lovely black leather portfolio. Consisting of 4 typed pages of the message which was delivered "Before A Joint Session of the Senate and The House of Representatives". The preliminary page contains a taped in black and white photo of Johnson with his autographed inscription below his photo:  "To Bob O'Brien / With Appreciation / from his old friend / Lyndon B. Johnson / Jan 15, 1964" . The typed page opposite contains his sharing of gratitude with a stamped signature. The pamphlet appears to have been originally issued with the typed page of gratitude, however it appears that the page opposite was likely originally blank to which President Johnson later added his photo and his personal inscription to Bob O'Brien. The pages are age toned, the tape over the photograph has yellowed, else a very clean pamphlet with an outstanding vibrant inscription by Johnson, issued shortly after the assassination of President Kennedy while President Johnson was first acting in the capacity of President. The leather portfolio is in wonderful condition with just minor scuffing. The leather portfolio is 7" x 10", the soft wrap pamphlet is 6.5" x 10".

Shown in part:

"...As lady Bird and I count our blessings, we count first and most gratifying your support, your counsel and your friendship... Of all we have shared since November 22d, no moment was more challenging for me-your prayers never so deeply gratifying-as when I spoke before the Joint Session of The Congress...."

His message to Congress begins with "All I have I would have given gladly not to be standing here today. The greatest leader of our time has been struck down by the foulest deed of our time..." Please see the images for the full "Message".

An extremely scarce signed copy from what must have been a very difficult first Presidential Message just after the death of Kennedy.
