Description:

"Love Ya - Elvis Presley" Signed Superb Vintage Photo

A superb vintage 8" x 10" publicity photograph of Rock 'n Roll superstar Elvis Presley (1935-1972), signed by him and the three original members of his first touring band, ca. 1955. On the reverse of the iconic "folded hands" portrait of Presley, he has signed as "love ya - / Elvis Presley" at center, Scotty Moore has signed as "Many Thanks / Scotty Moore," Bill Blake has signed as "Bill Blake" and D.J. Fontana has signed as "Don Fontana." Presley's name and the "160 Union Ave, Memphis, Tenn." address of his then manager Bob Neal appear along the bottom. Reverse impressions of the signatures are lightly visible recto. Isolated minor crazing to the upper left corner of the photo. Minor wrinkles to the lower right corner recto. A slight purple scuff along the top edge mentioned just for accuracy. Else near fine.

The glossy black and white photograph depicts Presley clasping his hands and looking meditative; known as the "folded hands" photograph, this image would become one of the most popular all-time portraits of Presley. The "folded hands" portrait was one of eleven taken of Presley by Memphis, Tennessee photographer William Speer in July 1955 (Speer's name is partly legible in the lower right corner of the photograph recto.) This was the then 20-year-old Presley's first professional photo shoot; it included six serious portraits including "folded hands" but also five cheesecake shots with Presley shirtless! The "folded hands" portrait was the centerpiece of much of Presley's earliest promotional material. It figured prominently in Presley-related music publishing, mass marketing, and the Elvis Presley Fan Club.

Presley's first touring band was comprised of himself on rhythm acoustic guitar; Winfield "Scotty" Moore (1931-2016) as lead guitar; Bill Black (1926-1965) on bass; and after 1955, drummer Dominic "Don" or "D.J." Fontana (1931-2018). In 1955, Colonel Tom Parker negotiated the exclusive management of Presley's talent and secured a contract with RCA Records. 1956's chart-topping rockabilly single "Heartbreak Hotel" hypnotized American teenagers the year after.
