Lincoln Assassination Playbill for Fateful Our American Cousin

[LINCOLN ASSASSINATION.] Playbill for Our American Cousin, April 21, 1866, Printed Document. 1 p., 4ʺ x 9.5ʺ. Some toning; very good.

This playbill announces the list night of Laura Keene’s engagement of the comedy Our American Cousin in New Haven, Connecticut, on April 21, 1866. One year earlier, Keene had been starring in Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., when actor John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln.

Laura Keene had premiered the play in 1858 at her theatre in New York City. By the spring of 1866, she had played the role of Florence Trenchard in Our American Cousin more than five hundred times. Another of the main actors on the night of Lincoln’s assassination, Harry Hawk, also starred in this production a year later, although most of the remaining cast was different. Keene was touring New England in the spring of 1866 and played to full houses in Hartford and New Haven, in Connecticut, Springfield and New Bedford in Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island.

This playbill comes from New Haven, Connecticut, where Keene, Hawk, and company had performed Our American Cousin on Wednesday, April 18. Originally scheduled for three nights only, the troupe performed at the Music Hall for the rest of the week, ending with this performance on Saturday, April 21. This playbill was printed by John H. Benham, a prominent New Haven printer who produced The General Statutes of the State of Connecticut that same year.
