Description:

Lee Harvey Oswald Mug Shot, Limited Edition Print from Original Negative

A limited-edition gelatin silver, black and white print, measuring 10" x 8", taken in Dallas, Texas on November 23, 1963. A first-generation exhibition-quality print, No. 26 of 50. Oswald's mugshot was captured following his arrest in connection with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the suspected murder of Dallas Police Officer J. D. Tippit. The photograph shows two side-by-side bust portraits of Oswald, one facing forward, the other in profile. The prisoner, wearing a loose-fitting white undershirt, is seated in a chair with the police placard above his right shoulder, listing the date and Oswald's case number 54018. This particularly sharp and crisp print is so detailed that the iodine stains surrounding the wounds on Oswald's neck and forehead are clearly visible, especially in the profile shot. Printed from a negative found in the papers of photography expert Cecil Wayne Kirk, the image was later used in connection with Kirk's testimony before the 1978 House Select Committee on Assassinations investigation. Very fine. Authenticity stamp on verso.

Authorities suspect that, on November 22, 1963, around 12:30 pm, Lee Harvey Oswald shot and killed President Kennedy from the 6th Floor of the Texas School Book Depository located in downtown Dallas. After escaping, Oswald encountered Police Officer Tippit, whom he purportedly shot, and then fled into a movie theater. Oswald was discovered there and was wounded when Dallas police officers attempted to disarm and subdue him. By 2 pm that same day, Oswald was in police custody. These mug shots were taken sometime during the following day.

Cecil Wayne Kirk (1938-2011) was a police officer, investigator, and photography expert who served with the D.C. Metropolitan Police from 1960 to 1980, during which time he assisted with the federal investigation into the assassination of John F. Kennedy. In 1978, Kirk testified before the House Select Committee on Assassinations as a photography expert. During these hearings, Kirk helped prove the veracity of the oft-disputed photographs of Oswald posing in his backyard with the rifle he allegedly used to assassinate John F. Kennedy. Kirk also used Oswald's November 1963 mug shots when determining the identity of a man in an Associated Press photograph who resembled Oswald standing in the doorway of the Texas School Book Depository, taken just moments before Kennedy was shot. The Warren Commission concluded that the individual was Billy Nolan Lovelady, another employee of the School Book Depository. Critics have since disputed that assertion, but the 1978 House Select Committee came to the same conclusion.
