Description:

Large P.G.T. Beauregard Photograph with Hand-Painted Details

An oversized sepia-colored photograph of Confederate General Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard (1818-1893) with hand-painted details. Framed behind glass in a handsome Eastlake style mahogany-finished frame. Beauregard's face and hands have been painted flesh color, and his eyes have been accentuated. Scattered foxing. An area located between and to the left of Beauregard's legs has been retouched, where there is minor craquelure. Not examined out of the frame. Isolated loss to the applied latticework of the frame. The sight size of the photo is 9.25" x 14.75" while the frame overall measures 14.25" x 19.75" x .75." Else very good to near fine.

The photo depicts a full-length portrait of Beauregard, white-haired and dressed in an elegant morning frock coat, standing in front of a late nineteenth-century photo studio backdrop.

Beauregard was a West Point graduate who would also serve as Superintendent of the United States Military Academy. During the Civil War, Beauregard defended Charleston, South Carolina and Petersburg, Virginia, and also brilliantly commanded Confederates forces in the Western Theater. He was awarded the rank of brigadier general in March 1861.
