Description:

Jack Kerouac's U Mass Honorary Doctorate

Jack Kerouac's University of Massachusetts at Lowell Doctorate of Letters Degree, honored posthumously, 11" x 8.5". Dated June 3, 2007. The award had been accepted by the executor of Kerouac’s literary estate, brother-in-law John Sampas, at the June 2, 2007 commencement ceremony at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Accompanied by a lovely black and white print of Kerouac. Fine condition. Provenance: The piece will be accompanied by an estate certification signed by John Shen-Sampas, executor of the Kerouac Estate. John Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife.

“Jack Kerouac is synonymous with Lowell,” said John Wooding, UMass Lowell provost. “His books made Lowell a literary location known to the world, like Thoreau’s ‘Walden’ did for Concord. It is fitting for UMass Lowell to be the university that recognizes his achievement as one of the most important authors of the 20th century.” This will be the only college degree awarded thus far to the famous writer, who is studied by English literature majors worldwide. Kerouac dropped out of Columbia University in his second year.
