Description:

John Philip Sousa Nice TLS Recollecting His Days as Conductor of the Washington, D.C. Marine Corps Band

1p typed letter signed by John Philip Sousa (1854-1932), American composer and bandleader, as "John Philip Sousa" at lower right. Written in Cincinnati, Ohio on April 19, 1915 on watermarked "Hotel Sinton" stationery. Expected light folds, else near fine. 8.5" x 11". Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope, postmarked and bearing a cancelled 2 cent carmine George Washington stamp. Minor weathering and letter-opened at right.

John Philip Sousa addressed this thank you note to Mrs. Lewis Perrine née Harriet Adelaide "Addie" Slack Perrine (1859-1926) of Trenton, New Jersey. He wrote in part, "You know I had a splendid time when I dined at your house while in Trenton…the portrait of your father vivified the remembrances of my maturer days, when I was at the head of the Marine band…"

Mrs. Perrine's father was Major William Bond Slack (1821-1895), who served as a Quartermaster in the U.S. Marine Corps. Sousa probably met Slack sometime during the former's tenure as leader of the U.S. Marine Corps Band, called "The President's Own", in Washington, D.C. between 1880-1892.

Sousa, hailed as the “American March King”, was an accomplished musician, composer, and conductor. Trained in voice, violin, piano, flute, and cornet among other instruments, Sousa had perfect pitch. He also contributed to the design of the Sousaphone, a brass tuba-like instrument. Of the 136 marches that Sousa composed, “Semper Fidelis” (1888) and “Stars and Stripes Forever” (1896) are the most famous.
