John F. Kennedy Signed Appointment of Female Conservationist to Land Management Task Force

Oversized document signed by 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) as "John F Kennedy" at lower right. Countersigned by U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk (1909-1994) as "Dean Rusk" at lower left. Signed in Washington, D.C. on December 19, 1961. Partly printed and partly handwritten, and bearing a large presidential seal at left. Isolated smudging to Kennedy's signature. A tiny closed tear to the paper seal and a few wrinkles throughout. Minor surface abrasions found along the edges where the piece was once matted and framed. Else near fine. 22.75" x 19". Provenance: From the Collection of Marian Sulzberger Heiskell & Andrew Heiskell Collection.

President Kennedy appointed "Marian Sulzberger Dryfoos of New York" to the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission in late 1961. Marian later met with President Kennedy and fellow commissioners at the White House on January 30, 1962. (See the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum, Accession Number AR7015-A, to view White House photographer Abbie Rowe's photo of this event.)

The Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission (ORRRC) was established in 1958 to address America's new need for open space. Conflicting postwar social, cultural, and demographic trends had created a new leisure class eager to explore the outdoors, but with limited access to it. The ORRRC presented its report to President Kennedy in January 1962. Their findings analyzed how Americans used open space--winter sports, hunting, fishing, hiking, etc.--and broke it down by age and income. Their recommendations would later inform the government's attitudes towards land management and environmental policy making.

Marian Sulzberger Heiskell (she married Andrew Heiskell in 1965) ran "The New York Times" between 1963-1997. She was also an influential conservationist, and served on many green New York City organizations, such as New Yorkers for Parks.
