John A. Dix, then serving as Secretary of State for New York, interrupted his summer vacation to send this message to Deputy Secretary of State of New York Archibald Campbell. Dix assured Campbell that no business matters were time-sensitive and that he would return to Albany soon, writing in part:

"…The election-notice was prepared by me before I left Albany, + I think I gave it to Henry Nugent to copy. I spoke to Mr. Bunt about it, not, as it was not to be inserted in the Report (?) till the 1. of Aug…I am not obliged to insert it in the State paper till the first of September, if I remember the requirements of the law in this respect, and I will be back in time to have it published by the 15th - or the 17th Aug, at farthest…"

John A. Dix served as Secretary of State for New York between 1833-1839. More than two decades later, Dix would play several important roles in the Civil War in his capacity as Union Army major general. Dix was responsible for keeping Maryland in the Union by devising an ingenious ploy; by arresting six members of the Maryland legislature, he prevented the assembly from convening and voting on the question of secession. Dix also arranged a gentleman's agreement with Confederate General Daniel Harvey Hill--often referred to as the Dix-Hill Cartel--concerning the exchange of Union and Confederate prisoners of war in mid-1862.
