JFK Ticket To 1961 Birthday Gala Hosted By Democratic National Committee

Measuring 5.125" x 3.625", Washington, D.C., May 27, 1961. A ticket to John F. Kennedy's 44th birthday dinner and Democratic National Committee fundraising event held at the National Guard Armory in Washington, D.C. on May 27, 1961. Ticket Serial No. 4288 granted access to this exclusive event. Printed cream stock card. Light toning and soiling.

The Democratic National Committee used the May 29th birthday of newly inaugurated President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) as an opportunity to recharge the beleaguered party's coffers. Hundreds of guests attended the event, which included speeches by President Kennedy, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, and former President Harry S. Truman. Guests reserved $100 place settings at the Armory's dozens of 10-person oval tables and enjoyed door prizes, music by Sydney, and entertainment by Jerry Lewis. An enormous 3-tier cake crowned by a miniature replica of the White House and emblazoned "Happy Birthday Mr. President" was displayed in front of the armory's head table.

In his speech at the event, Kennedy referred to the legacy of his Democratic Party predecessors and their record of effecting change: "…I think is worthy for us all to--who are Democrats, and that is, the success of any President of the United States who has the distinction of being a Democrat is due to the fact that he is supported by a strong, democratic, progressive party. Woodrow Wilson once said in 1913, 'What good is the success of a political party unless it's used by the nation for a great national purpose?' And I believe in the administration of Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman, and now today--the Democratic Party has a great national purpose, to move this country forward."

Less than a year later, President Kennedy would celebrate his 45th birthday at Madison Square Garden serenaded by blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe.
